3D Animation3D Character

Invited by Louis Wong, Late Studio created a promotional video based on the key visual of his solo exhibition. Beyond recreating the 2D artwork as a 3D scene, the video extends the exhibition into animation, bringing out the childlike personality of the protagonist, Oniko.

One of the biggest challenges of this project was recreating the “painterly feel” of the artwork in 3D. The team added 2D brushstroke backgrounds to the 3D scene to build Oniko’s fantasy space, and used running animation and camera movement to bring the exhibition animation to life.

Animation ConceptRecreating a Fantasy Flower Field

The black sky represents the artist’s pessimism about the future. Yet Oniko manages to spot countless small bursts of color within the darkness and imagines all kinds of fun fantasies—which is the theme of this exhibition: “Fantasia!”

When Louis Wong first described the flower field in the key visual, the team immediately thought of the scene in Ghost of Tsushima where the protagonist runs through a field of flowers. After a short discussion, this became the direction for the animation.

Although the “Ghost of Tsushima flower field” direction was set, the scale of the 3D environment still had to balance the surreal proportions of Louis’s paintings with the relatively realistic proportions of Tsushima—showing off the stunning flower field without straying too far from the exhibition’s childlike feel.
